About the Event
The Symposium on Application of Automation Technology and Advanced Analysis Techniques in Fatigue and Fracture Testing will be held May 8, 2024. The symposium is organized by ASTM Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture, and will be held at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States in conjunction with the standards development meetings of the committee. The language of the symposium will be English.
Objective and Scope
The ongoing rapid advancement of digital systems hardware and software technology continues to provide new opportunities for scientists and engineers in fatigue and fracture testing and analysis. Greater performance, decreased cost hardware and software systems are providing enhanced capability for applications in the areas of test control, data acquisition, data analysis and interpretation, modeling, simulation, and integration of testing with design. This symposium continues the open exchange of information at the international level on computer technology applications and innovations in fatigue and fracture testing and data analysis.
The goal of this symposium is to provide an international forum for technical knowledge exchange emphasizing ongoing work and recent development in the following traditional automation-related technical areas:
- Novel approaches for improved control and measurement in materials testing systems,
- Monitoring, generating and/or controlling fixed and variable amplitude (spectrum) force and/or displacement,
- More efficient and/or cost-effective methods of generating characterization data,
- Implemented algorithms to formalize determination of key features in test records,
- Analysis, simulation, and modeling of fatigue crack nucleation or growth of components (and factoring this into testing), and,
- Laboratory automation as well as information management systems.
As a secondary goal for this symposium, user experience is solicited in application of the recent ASTM E3076-18 “Standard Practice for Determination of the Slope in the Linear Region of a Test Record”. Topics and issues for consideration include (but are not limited to):
- Comparison of Slope Determination by the Analysis of Residuals (SDAR) with other methods,
- Characteristics of datasets that fail quality metrics or confound the algorithm,
- Evaluation of the quality metric values utilized in this standard (and alternate metrics),
- Identification of any and all areas where the algorithm presented in ASTM E3076-18 could be improved (pre-processing of datasets, and other non-monotonically increasing datasets and application of the algorithm to other standards).
Publication Information
Symposium authors are required to submit their papers for ASTM publication in Selected Technical Papers (STP), an online and printed, peer-reviewed publication for the international scientific and engineering community. After the final selection of abstracts has been approved, the ASTM Editorial Office will send authors’ instructions via email only. STP papers should be full-length technical papers of approximately 10,000 words, significantly contribute to the technical literature, and must include a review of past work in the relevant area and present information of current interest or probe new fields. Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP are due online no later than May 31, 2024 at the ASTM Editorial Office. The corresponding author (the author who is the main contact with ASTM Headquarters) will receive a copy of his/her paper in portable document format (PDF). All published authors will have the opportunity to purchase reprints of their papers at a nominal cost. Only those papers submitted by the manuscript due date will be included in the STP.
Please note that all submitted papers are subject to peer review by two independent reviewers. The STP will be submitted to the Library of Congress with an ISBN number and will be reviewed for inclusion in the Web of Science Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI) and Google Scholar.

Continuing Education Units
Symposium attendees interested in receiving 0.55 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) must complete the CEU application form in the back of the program booklet and email it to ASTM Symposia Operations at symposia@astm.org. You must be registered and have attended the entire event in order to receive the CEU’s. A certificate will be sent to you via email approximately 1 to 2 weeks after the symposium concludes.55
